Insights, Stories, and Tips for the Inquisitive Mind
Our journey began in the vibrant world of creative arts, a path that has not only shaped us as artists but as leaders, educators, and advocates. Through the arts, we discovered powerful skills — creativity, communication, resilience — that transcend the studio and stage, enriching our lives in education, business, and community leadership. Inspired by our own transformation, we're dedicated to unlocking this potential in others. Our mission is to guide individuals in exploring their creative talents, developing their personal and professional skills, and empowering them to lead and inspire in all aspects of their lives.
Our ethos is simple – everyone has a story to tell, a song to sing, or a dance to share. We believe in the transformative power of the arts to enrich lives and communities. By making arts accessible to all, we aim to foster confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
So, dive in! Explore, learn, and let us know if there's something specific you're curious about. We're here to help, one post at a time.
At BHVA, we’re all about empowering young people to find their voice and thrive in environments where they feel safe, confident, and inspired.
In this blog, we explore the power of creative environments and why they are so essential for teenagers. Here’s what we discovered and how you can apply these insights in your own life.
A creative environment isn’t just about paintbrushes, music, or a stage. It’s any space where young people feel safe to express themselves, explore ideas, and make mistakes without judgment.
It’s about:
Breaking the mold: Learning doesn’t always have to happen in a classroom. Creative environments can be anywhere - on a walk, in a cozy room, or even around a kitchen table.
Allowing choice: Giving teens a say in where and how they learn can help them feel more invested and less restricted.
Simplifying the space: Sometimes, less is more. A clutter-free, calm setting can help young people focus and spark their imagination.
Most importantly, a creative environment is one where facilitators, parents, or mentors adapt their approach to fit the individual - not the other way around.
Teenagers are navigating one of the most complex stages of life. Their brains are developing rapidly, emotions are heightened, and hormones are in overdrive.
A creative environment provides the perfect space to:
Experiment and fail: Without fear of judgment, teens feel free to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them.
Explore ownership: When teens have the freedom to make choices, they feel empowered and develop higher-order thinking skills.
Build confidence: Those “aha!” moments when something clicks are priceless. They help teens trust themselves and push their boundaries.
Here are a couple of stories that highlight the magic of creative environments:
Dungeons and Dragons sessions: One of our students, who initially struggled with open-ended questions, has blossomed through a creative approach. By creating a Dungeons and Dragons story together, they’ve learned to think critically, expand their ideas, and engage in meaningful discussions - all in a space where they feel safe and inspired.
Parenting wins: Lindsey has seen a positive changes in her son by giving him space to take ownership of his actions. Instead of directing him, she focused on doing her part and letting him figure out his, after an open conversation about what there parts looked like. The result? A shift in responsibility and confidence.
Want to try this at home, in school, or wherever you work with young people? Here are some actionable tips:
Give them space and time: Don’t rush for instant results. Teens often need time to process instructions and find their own way of doing things.
Rethink the setting: Step out of traditional spaces. Could a walk, a quiet room, or a different approach spark engagement?
Allow for flexibility: Life isn’t linear, and neither is learning. Be open to backtracking, revisiting ideas, or exploring new paths.
Encourage ownership: Let teens take the lead, make choices, and explore their own interests.
A creative environment isn’t just about learning - it’s about helping teens develop into confident, capable adults.
When we give young people the tools and freedom to explore, they discover not just the answers but their own potential.
Let’s champion creativity for the next generation.
