Insights, Stories, and Tips for the Inquisitive Mind
Our journey began in the vibrant world of creative arts, a path that has not only shaped us as artists but as leaders, educators, and advocates. Through the arts, we discovered powerful skills — creativity, communication, resilience — that transcend the studio and stage, enriching our lives in education, business, and community leadership. Inspired by our own transformation, we're dedicated to unlocking this potential in others. Our mission is to guide individuals in exploring their creative talents, developing their personal and professional skills, and empowering them to lead and inspire in all aspects of their lives.
Our ethos is simple – everyone has a story to tell, a song to sing, or a dance to share. We believe in the transformative power of the arts to enrich lives and communities. By making arts accessible to all, we aim to foster confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
So, dive in! Explore, learn, and let us know if there's something specific you're curious about. We're here to help, one post at a time.

We think we know ... but do we?
If you've ever wondered what teenagers actually need right now... you're not the only one.
We’re both parents to teenagers. So we get it. Or at least… we think we do.
Teenage years are messy. Emotional. Confusing.
There’s pressure, identity, friendships, school, social media and underneath all of that, they’re trying to figure out who they are.
So instead of guessing... we asked.

Through our work with teenagers across schools, alternative provision, and community settings, across the local authority, we asked...
what do teenagers actually want?
Not surface level.
Not “what do you want to do this weekend?”
But what actually makes a difference to their lives.
The answer surprised a lot of people…
Because it wasn’t more apps, more websites, more online platforms. They’ve already got those. What they said was this:
“We want connection.”
Real connection. With real people.
People they trust.
People who listen.
People who don’t disappear.
You might have seen this too.
If a young person walks into a session and we go straight in with teaching…
It doesn’t land.
But, if we start with:
“How’s your week been?”
“What’s been going on?”
Everything changes.
Because they need somewhere to offload, celebrate, vent, be heard.
And sometimes … that person can’t be you. Not because you’ve done anything wrong. But because they’re working things out.
They don’t want to worry you.
They don’t want to upset you.
So having another trusted adult matters.
Here’s something worth thinking about…
When was the last time a teenager felt:
not judged
not labelled
not “just another teenager”
Because let’s be honest teenagers don’t always get the best reputation.
But we see something different.
We see kindness, self-awareness, creativity, resilience. We see young people doing incredible things.
A real moment

The other night, we were locking up at the studio. There were a couple of teenagers sitting outside.
Now ... depending on your perspective, you might think: “Ugh… what are they doing?”
But actually? They just wanted somewhere quiet to sit and talk.
When they saw us, they politely moved on. No drama. No trouble. Just young people needing space.
They want spaces, people, conversations. Somewhere they can just exist without pressure.
So we’ve taken this seriously. Everything we do at BHVA already builds in check-ins before sessions, relationship-first approach, safe, creative spaces
But we’re also thinking bigger.
We’re exploring creating a creative youth space for ages 13-19.
Somewhere they can connect, create, talk and grow.
No pressure.
No labels.
No expectations.
Just space.
And we’re already seeing it happen…
Our Drama Squad has started to shift. It’s becoming more than just drama. It’s starting to feel like a youth space - because this is what they've told us they need.
Different ages. Different reasons for being there. But all finding confidence, voice, connection. And honestly, it’s one of the most exciting things we’ve seen.

If you take one thing from this, let it be this:
Start with connection.
Before targets, teaching, outcomes...
because when a young person feels safe that’s when growth happens.
What if… instead of asking:
“What’s wrong with teenagers?”
We asked
“What do they need from us?”
Our ask (and it’s a simple one)
Give them a chance.
Give them space.
Give them time.
Give them someone who will listen.
Because when you do…
You might be surprised at what they’re capable of.
If this resonates...
it might be time to look at how we're supporting young people differently.
You can explore how we do that here
