Insights, Stories, and Tips for the Inquisitive Mind
Our journey began in the vibrant world of creative arts, a path that has not only shaped us as artists but as leaders, educators, and advocates. Through the arts, we discovered powerful skills — creativity, communication, resilience — that transcend the studio and stage, enriching our lives in education, business, and community leadership. Inspired by our own transformation, we're dedicated to unlocking this potential in others. Our mission is to guide individuals in exploring their creative talents, developing their personal and professional skills, and empowering them to lead and inspire in all aspects of their lives.
Our ethos is simple – everyone has a story to tell, a song to sing, or a dance to share. We believe in the transformative power of the arts to enrich lives and communities. By making arts accessible to all, we aim to foster confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging.
So, dive in! Explore, learn, and let us know if there's something specific you're curious about. We're here to help, one post at a time.
At BHVA, we know drama is so much more - it’s a way to break barriers, build confidence, and help you face your biggest fears - not just in performance but in everyday life.
In our latest vlog, we sat down with Sam, our Drama Specialist, to chat about how drama has helped him (and so many others) overcome fears like public speaking, social anxiety, and stepping outside their comfort zones. You can watch the candid chat here!
Here are 5 powerful ways drama can help YOU conquer YOUR fears - straight from Sam's story:
"It's a completely normal feeling, standing on stage thinking, 'I’m sweating, I need the toilet!' But you step into that role, and you embrace it." — Sam
Drama teaches you to embrace fear instead of running from it. Whether it’s speaking up in class, trying something new, or facing tough situations, drama gives you the tools to handle fear and keep going.
Top Tip: Start small - try a one-to-one session or a small group. Every little step builds up your bravery.
"When you act, you believe you are someone else - and that helps you believe in yourself." — Sam
Acting lets you step into someone else's shoes, and sometimes that makes it easier to be bold. You might be pretending to be confident - but before you know it, you start feeling that confidence for real.
Top Tip: Choose a character who is strong, funny, or fearless - and let them show you what’s possible.
"It changed my life. I was so shy. But now I can speak to anyone. Once you’ve stood on stage, you realise you can do it anywhere." — Sam
Drama isn’t just about acting. It teaches you how to speak up, share ideas, and connect with people - all skills that help in jobs, school, and everyday conversations.
Top Tip: Practise speaking as a character - sometimes it’s easier to say scary things when you’re “someone else.”
"Even big actors feel fear. But once you’ve done it once, the deep end becomes the shallow end." — Sam
Fear is natural - and it’s okay to feel nervous. The magic of drama is that you learn how to push through. Every time you get up and try, you prove to yourself you can do it - and each time gets a little easier.
Top Tip: Remind yourself - even professionals feel fear! If they can keep going, so can you.
"At the end of the day, you’ve got to embrace YOU. You have a very good particular set of skills as a human being - once you access them, it can change everything." — Sam
Drama gives you permission to be unapologetically yourself. Through role-play and performance, you can explore your strengths, find your voice, and learn to be proud of who you are - nerves and all.
Top Tip: Focus on what makes you, YOU - drama isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being real and honest.
What if drama could help YOU conquer YOUR fears? Whether you want to boost confidence, tackle anxiety, or just try something creative - you don’t have to do it alone.
