Some stories are meant to be read.
Others are meant to be explored.
At Story Steps Dance, children don't simply listen to stories - they step inside them.
Each term, we take one carefully chosen story and transform it into a creative journey filled with movement, imagination and discovery.
As children stomp through forests, stretch like giraffes, tiptoe past sleeping bears and become the characters themselves, something wonderful begins to happen.
They aren't just enjoying a story.
They're building confidence.
Developing communication.
Strengthening movement skills.
Learning to express themselves.
And most importantly...
They're discovering that learning can be joyful.
Children learn best when they're fully involved.
That's why Story Steps Dance doesn't ask children to sit still and listen to a story.
Instead, they become part of it.
Each week, stories come to life through movement, imagination and creative exploration. As children stomp through forests, stretch like giraffes or tiptoe past sleeping bears, they're building much more than memories.
They're developing the confidence to express themselves, the communication skills to share ideas, the coordination to move with purpose and the social skills to explore alongside others.
The story simply becomes the adventure that helps it all happen.

"The story is the starting point. Everything else grows from there."

As children become characters, solve problems and share ideas, they develop language, listening and confidence without the pressure of getting the "right" answer.

Trying a new movement joining in with a favourite character or sharing an idea all help children discover that they can do more than they first thought.

Every stretch, jump, balance and adventure has a purpose, helping children develop coordination body awareness and gross motor skills while simply enjoying the story.

Small groups create a welcoming environment where children can take part at their own pace, build friendships and enjoy learning together through creativity.

Every term, one carefully chosen story becomes a creative adventure that children explore together.
Rather than rushing from one activity to the next, story Steps allows children to revisits the same story over several weeks. As the story unfolds, so do their confidence, imagination and skills.

We meet the story together.

Children become the characters.

Through movement, music and creativity.

Every week children build new confidence.
Every story is carefully chosen to inspire movement, imagination and opportunities for children to learn through creativity.
Story Steps Dance has grown from BHVA's wider Story Steps approach, developed through working with young children using storytelling movement and creativity to encourage confidence, communication and early development.
We've seen first-hand how stories can help children engage, express themselves, develop new skills and enjoy learning in ways that feel natural and joyful.
That experience has shaped every Story Steps Dance session, creating a welcoming environment where children can explore, imagine and grow at their own pace.
Story Steps Dance has been designed for Home Educated children aged 3-5 years. Sessions are carefully planned to suit this age group, using storytelling, movement and creative play to encourage confidence, communication and early development.
Not at all.
Story Steps Dance isn't about learning dance routines or getting the steps "right". It's about exploring stories through movement, imagination and creativity, so every child can join in at their own pace.
Many children take a little time to feel comfortable in a new environment, and that's absolutely fine.
Our small group sizes and welcoming approach allow children to join in at their own pace. There's never any pressure to perform, and we celebrate every child's individual journey.
We welcome children with a wide range of strengths, interests and learning styles.
If there's anything you'd like us to know before your child attend, please get in touch. We'll always do our best to support your child and help them feel welcome.
Children should simply come in comfortable clothes that allow them to move freely.
No dance uniform or specialist footwear is required.
No.
We provide all of the resources needed for each session. Just bring a drink and be ready for a creative adventure.
Yes.
Our sessions are designed as drop-off sessions, but we understand that some children benefit from having a parent or career stay for their first session while they settle.
We'll always work with you to help your child feel comfortable.
Yes.
If spaces are available, you're welcome to join during the term. Because Story Steps revisits and develops stories over time, we'll help your child settle in and quickly become part of the group.
Yes.
Towards the end of each term, families will be invited to join us for a special session where children can share some of the stories, movement and creativity they've explored together - if they'd like to.
The focus is on celebrating their journey rather than putting on a polished performance.
Every child is different, and choosing the right activity is an important decision.
If you'd like to talk through whether Story Steps Dance is the right fit for your child, we'd be happy to help.
