    Can anyone learn to sing?

A simple answer is yes. I firmly believe that everyone has the potential to sing, and sing in tune. For some it will come easier than others – in just the same way that running a short distance will be easier for some over running a long distance (or in my case, just generally not running).

We try to tailor the learning to you, and if a particular approach is not working, then we will quickly change tact to find the most effective way to help you achieve your goals.

I’ve been told I can’t sing, is this true?

Without hearing you, I cannot comment definitively. However, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that it’s probably NOT true.

Most people can learn sing. Some people may struggle more than others and may have to spend some time on training their ear to recognise and reproduce notes. But this is a LEARNABLE skill.

A very small percentage of people suffer from something called amusia, which means they cannot tell the differences between notes. These people tend to struggle to listen to music as they will find it very annoying.

How much do singing lessons cost?

Individual singing lessons start from £20 for half an hour, and can be booked in 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions. Payment must be made before  singing lesson takes place. If using online booking, you’ll be asked to pay to confirm your place.

If booking by phone/email then an invoice will be sent out with payment details. This invoice will need to be paid before any lesson is confirmed, or meeting invitation sent out during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where do singing lessons take place?

During the COVID-19 pandemic all lessons and classes are taking place online, using Zoom. Once an individual lesson has been booked, you will receive an email with confirmation details, including your own personal meeting ID information.

For group classes, an email will be sent out each week, approximately an hour before the start of the class, with the details that you will need to access the Zoom session for our particular class. These change each week for security purposes.

How do I access the online courses?

Once you’ve signed up to an online course you will have your own username and password to the course website (Thinkific). If you forget your password then you will need to request a new one through the course website as BHVA does not have any information about these.

Each week, before a class takes place, you will receive an email with the meeting invitation for your session which will take place on Zoom.

There are tutorial videos in each course on how to use the course website and Zoom, to help you get the most out of your courses/classes.

What happens in a Harmonix (adult) class?

A lot of fun. Bring a drink (wine/tea/your chosen tipple). We have a quick natter whilst everyone is coming together. We then start the session by doing a quick, gentle, physical and vocal warm up.

We then go on to discuss and explore a particular part of our voice – be prepared to make some silly sounds. It’s then on to the songs that we’re learning. These are broken down to help learning, and there is no such thing as a silly question (although I may occasionally give some silly answers).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a quick overview of the class, and a downloadable resource is put up within the course website for you to access if you wish to. This can help with knowledge and understanding, but I’m aware this isn’t for everyone so it’s not compulsory for you to do.

What happens in a Sing Squad (kids) class?

A lot of noise. For the younger classes we tend to go around the group quickly to share out ‘news of the week’, before doing some physical and vocal warmups. They will be learning and discovering their voice or aspects of musicianship through games, and these are then transferred through to the songs that we are learning.Songs are broken down to help learning, and for Infants words are not needed although they are provided.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, an activity sheet and a quick overview of the week’s session is put up within the course website for you to download. These are not compulsory, but it something extra for you to use to help with occupying the children whilst you need to get on with other tasks.

What do I need to wear to Dance Squad?

Squad T-Shirt, leggings, bare feet, hair tied up and no Jewellery.

What is the youngest age you teach?

Our Voice Academy will teach anyone from the age of 4 years old, although we recommend Sing Squad Juniors as their first experience into vocal training. However, we have, and can, teach 4 year olds successfully on a one-to-one basis.

Our Dance Academy starts with children from 2 1/2 years old in our Dance Squad Pre School sessions.

How do I pay for my lessons?

BHVA operates a cashless system so all lessons must be paid for prior to session via website booking or through accounts.  All payment queries please direct to

How often should my child be practising between lessons?

This will differ for each child, and shouldn’t be a set amount. What we hope is that your child will develop and foster a passion for their art form and then will engage in practicing between lessons. Our membership site will give supporting materials so that you can practice in-between sessions as much as you would like to.

Can I stay and watch my child during a group session?

Parents will be invited in, when Covid Restrictions allow, to watch specific sessions but we ask that parents just drop off their child for their squad lesson.

How will I get feedback on how my child is doing?

Through our membership site you will see what skills your child is working on each week and resources to aid their progress to work on in between sessions. We run an open-door policy for any queries please contact us directly to discuss. Success and progress is always celebrated and shared.

What if I can’t make a lesson, what do I need to do?

Please contact us at  at least 24hours prior where possible. See terms and conditions in relation to absence from lessons.

    What is your cancellation policy?

Currently our cancellation policy is strictly 24 hours. If a lesson is cancelled with under 24 hours’ notice then full payment of the lesson will still be required. Where possible we will try to rearrange the lesson with you, but this cannot be guaranteed.

What is your Covid -19 policy?

We update this regularly in response to the latest government guidelines. All members are sent this. Please follow the link below to see
